The treatment room on Bluefin Ward in Worthing Hospital has been given a much-needed facelift making it a friendlier place for patients and their families.
Seeing a project come to fruition is always a great experience for the team at Rockinghorse.
After fundraising in the local community to help our supporters understand the importance of a particular piece of equipment or activity, seeing it arrive in the hospital or ward where it’s most needed is a real buzz.
And this is especially true when we create amazing new spaces for the hospitals we support. Transforming treatment environments for children and young people can have a huge impact on their experience of spending time in hospital.
Not only can it make their visit feel less like a hospital and more fun, but it can also help provide calming spaces away from a hospital bed for longer term patients and support children and young people with additional needs to feel more comfortable.
Recently, a treatment room in Worthing Hospital has been newly decorated after the team from Bluefin Ward put in an application for funding.
Ward Manager Sam Barnes explained more, “The treatment room can be a scary place for patients as they can be worried about the treatment they are about to receive. Having a welcoming space with more distractions around the room can take the edge off and hopefully help them feel a bit more at ease.”
“But now, every child that comes on to Bluefin or our CYPDU who will require a blood test or lumbar puncture will benefit from this room, and this is more than 3,000 children and young people. The feedback from patients and their families so far has been incredible and the space has totally been transformed.”
Not only does this help young people feel more comfortable, but it also helps the medical staff do their work quicker, helping reduce waiting times and stress for families.
The space that’s been created was previously not a very welcoming place, with lots of medical equipment and just a few tired pictures on the walls and windows. But now, with the help of Grosvenor Interiors, the walls, windows and cupboard doors have all been decorated with beautiful new marine themed images.

Fran Masey-O’Neill, Project Manager at Rockinghorse, said, “A great deal of my time is spent helping to get the projects that we fund completed so they can start making life easier for young patients, their families, and our wonderful colleagues in the NHS.
“So being able to come and see this finished space is absolutely brilliant. As soon as you walk in it feels so different; a much calmer, relaxing environment that will make a huge difference to the experience that patients will have of their treatment on Bluefin Ward.”
