Sensory Friendly Ward

Chalkhill Hospital in Haywards Heath is a specialist in-patient service for children and young people with mental health issues.

Over the last 18 months the hospital has seen a significant increase in young people with autism being admitted. The physical environment is a particularly important consideration for this group as it can negatively impact on their ability to engage with the support and treatment they need.

Working directly with their service users, this project will improve some of the indoor and outdoor spaces at the hospital including new outdoor gym equipment, sound absorbing panels in the dining and activity rooms and two specialist rocking chairs to help the young people regulate their nervous system through movement.

All of these improvements will help the team work with the young people, improve their wellbeing and recovery rates, and ensure a calmer environment.
