Our 50th Year

In 2017, Rockinghorse celebrated 50 years of life-changing work. Our Golden Jubilee offered the opportunity to reflect back on the impact our charity has had on thousands of local children.

When Dr Trevor Mann started the charity in 1967, he recognised real shortfalls and restrictions around paediatric care in Sussex. 50 years on, these challenges remain, but his legacy continues, most poignantly through the wonderful work of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU), which has saved the lives of thousands of premature babies.

From Rockinghorse’s inception, the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton has been the main beneficiary of our fundraising efforts. Many of you will have memories of the ‘Old Alex’ on Dyke Road, either as suffering patients or worried parents. In the 1990’s, the Rockinghorse Appeal was launched to raise funds for the ‘New Alex’. With over £1,000,000 raised, the dream became a reality in 2007 when the new children’s hospital was opened by HRH Princess Alexandra. 10 years on, the Alex is widely recognised as a centre of excellence across the region.

The contribution of Rockinghorse towards the success of the Alex is also widely recognised as we work tirelessly to improve, and save, the lives of sick children in Sussex, against a very public backdrop of challenges within the NHS. Rockinghorse has provided the Alex with the best, cutting-edge medical equipment, and we are often cited as the difference between good care and great care for our children. This is something everyone associated with the charities history should be incredibly proud of.

Time moves on, but for 50 years our message has remained the same; as the late great Dr Trevor Mann said, “We can’t always stop children getting sick, but with your help, we can help them get better.”

By supporting Rockinghorse, you are helping to ensure children’s services across Sussex are the best they possibly can be for our children now, and in the future. Thank you for supporting Rockinghorse and making our 50th anniversary a great success and extremely memorable.
