Sussexsport cycle for sick children
Sussexsport staff from the University of Sussex took part in a challenging charity cycle ride in support of Rockinghorse.
Five members of Sussexsport, and a Sussex alumna, completed the 275km round trip from the university campus at Falmer to France and back again earlier this month (6-8 May), raising a wonderful £843 to help make life better for sick children in Sussex.
Sussexsport Duty Manager Ben Ospalak organised the charity challenge and was joined by colleagues Terry Cooper, Mike Harman, Simon Tunley, Mark Beresford and Sussex alumna Emma Kelman for the three-day ride, which saw them cycle from Falmer to Newhaven to catch the ferry to Dieppe. The group then continued their journey along the French coast to Fécamp, before heading inland to Rouen and beginning the circular route back to Sussex.
Deputy Head of Sport, Simon Tunley, said: “The cycle ride was a great success, taking in some scenic places in Northern France with amazing weather most days. It was a fantastic team effort; everyone supported each other throughout the ride and this was made easier by the great leadership of Ben. Knowing we had managed to raise so much more money than we had planned also gave us the incentive to complete the ride. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who sponsored us.”
Sussexsport Duty Manager, Ben Ospalak, added: “The challenge was to raise much-needed funds for Rockinghorse as the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. One of the riders in our group has been personally affected and helped by Rockinghorse, after his niece was cared for at the hospital. During this time they were contacted by Rockinghorse and they offered her and her family a day out to the Sea Life Centre and had a fabulous day. What Rockinghorse provided in that trip was a really positive experience in the middle of a very scary time for her.”
