Support the ‘Scrap the Cap’ campaign!

Staff at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton have launched a unique campaign to raise money for our 50th year appeal.

The paediatric surgical team at the Alex have launched the ‘Scrap the Cap’ campaign, saving NHS funding being spent on throwaway paper caps, with them being replaced by handmade surgical hats.

Jennifer Billington, a paediatric surgical registrar, and Nina Wietek, a Junior Doctor at the Alex (pictured above), are running the campaign following research into the environmental impact of reusable versus disposable theatre hats in the paediatric surgical centre. In a bid to improve the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of the NHS, Jennifer and Nina have created the ‘Scrap the Cap’ initiative to provide handmade, reversible and reusable hats to all hospital staff who would like to support the fundraising idea.

For just £10 per hat, hospital staff can be the proud owner of a bespoke surgical cap, helping to save NHS funds and to make the surgical experience more accessible to young patients and their families. 100% of the profits from every order will be donated to our Golden Jubilee appeal, Sussex Giving for Sussex Children.

As the official fundraising arm of the Alex, we raise money for items necessary to every child’s treatment; from furnishings and toys for the wards, through to cutting-edge diagnostic machines and life-saving equipment. During our 50th year we are supporting a number of paediatric projects as we strive to make services stimulating and accessible for the many babies, children and young people who need them.

The Scrap the Cap campaign has seen Jennifer and Nina inundated with unusual design requests, ranging from tropical fish, toucans and macaws to unicorns and race cars. Following the initial launch this month, they have made in excess of 30 hats and have already received praised and comments from colleagues that the caps are not only bright and cheerful, but more comfortable than the paper hat alternatives too.

To support the campaign, simply pledge £10 per cap on the official JustGiving page, along with any special design requests, by clicking here. Keep up-to-date with the campaign by searching #scrapthecap on Instagram, and for more information email
