Despite many fundraising activities being curtailed this year, three Rockinghorse supporters have continued to raise money close to home.

Lucy Pond, Challenge Events Fundraising Manager at Rockinghorse, her mum Linda Mapp and Jane Frewing managed to raise nearly £4,000 by setting up stalls outside their homes and selling to their neighbours.

Lucy set up her stall outside her home in Hayward Heath, selling facemasks, handmade crafts and second-hand toys and books. She put the stall out every day, as long as it wasn’t raining, to raise funds for her London Marathon Just Giving page which she now hopes to run next year.

“It was a great way to get to know people during lockdown as many would stop and ask about the charity,” explained Lucy, “I even had a thank you card saying it had been the highlight of one family’s lockdown walks!”

Lucy’s mum Linda also set up a stall outside her home in Crowborough, selling sweet peas and figs from her garden. She built up a regular customer base and even ended up taking orders for the pretty plants. Linda not only supports Lucy with her fundraising in memory or Lucy’s son Aiden but has also previously volunteered at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.

And finally, Jane set up a stall outside her home in Kenton, near Exeter, selling facemasks, plants and homemade jam. Jane’s grandson Bobby was born prematurely and was cared for in the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, so Jane wanted to raise money for the charity that supports the hospital.

The money that Jane raised was donated to her daughter-in-law Cathy and granddaughter Lily’s fundraising page for their 2.6 Challenge during lockdown. Cathy and Lily ran round their garden 26 times to raise funds for Rockinghorse. Incredibly, the family’s combined fundraising efforts during lockdown have raised £2,835 for the Trevor Mann Baby Unit.

All this effort resulted in a total of just under £4,000 being raised. This is an amazing amount and just goes to show what can be achieved without venturing far from home!
