Roedean competition winner delivers Easter cake, along with a donation of Easter Eggs, to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital

Roedean, the well-known independent day and boarding school for girls in East Brighton, has supported Rockinghorse for several years, recently being chosen as the official charity of their Year 7 pupils.

The school has donated to Rockinghorse since 2020, organising Easter Egg collections, and running a special competition for the girls in Year 7 to design a cake which is then made and delivered to the Alex as a way of thanking the wonderful NHS staff who work there.

Miss Banford, Head of Year 7 at Roedean, said: “We announced the competition in assembly, asking the girls to design a cake, along with its toppings and filling, with the design aimed to help promote wellbeing.

“We had about 12 girls enter as well as other girls in the year collecting as many Easter eggs as possible for children in hospital over the Easter holiday.”

This year’s cake designing winner was Soraya, who wanted the cake to be cheerful and help people’s moods.

Soraya said, “I really love art and baking at home with my mum. I’m really pleased with the final cake – it’s much bigger than I expected!

“I hope all the doctors and nurses like it, and it brings a smile to their faces!”

Miss Banford added, “Soraya is a beautiful artists and really good at drawing. She also encouraged her friends to get involved in the competition so there were some really great entries.”

The competition was judged by the school’s expert pastry chef, Ruth Sambrook, and the opportunity to see their design made into a real cake by Ruth proved to be really popular. The finished cake not only looked delicious, with gingerbread biscuits and mini eggs decorating it, but the cake itself was flavoured lemon, lime and vanilla so it was sure to be delicious!

The final cake looked beautiful when it was finished and delivered to the Alex along with lots of Easter Eggs donated by Soraya’s classmates.

But the girls’ fundraising isn’t finished yet. They are also organising a charity abseil off Peacehaven Cliffs for Rockinghorse in June and hoping lots of the Year 7 pupils will sign up and fundraise even more for Rockinghorse.

Staff from the Play Team at the hospital were really happy to accept the cake and are looking forward to being able to share it with their colleagues throughout the children’s hospital.

Thanks so much to all the brilliant pupils and staff from Roedean for all their support and generosity both now and in the future.
