Two Roedean pupils delivered a beautiful Easter cake that they had designed, along with a donation of Easter Eggs, to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital
Roedean, the well-known independent day and boarding school for girls in East Brighton, has supported Rockinghorse for several years, recently being chosen as the official charity of their Year 7 pupils.
Since 2021 they have donated to the charity, organised Easter Egg collections, and run a special competition for the girls in Year 7 to design a cake which is then made and delivered to the Alex as a way of thanking the wonderful NHS staff who work there.
Kate Newman, Head of Year 7 at Roedean, said: “We’re so proud that the girls have really got behind the project, taking part in the cake designing competition, bringing Easter eggs in to donate and getting behind the charity. So far over the school has raised over £3,000 for Rockinghorse which is fantastic!”
This year’s cake designing winners were Saffron and Sorcha who decided to work together to come up with their design.
The girls said, “We knew there was a teddy theme and we wanted to keep an Easter theme as well, so we added the bunny ears to the teddy along with all the eggs and flowers.
“It’s a chocolate cake so it also fits with chocolate Easter eggs, there is confetti on the inside and the bear has a patch on his eye to show it’s for the hospital.”
The competition was judged by the school’s expert pastry chef, Ruth Sambrook, and the opportunity to see their design made into a real cake by Ruth proved to be really popular with many entries received from across the year.
The final cake looked wonderful when it was finished and delivered to the Alex along with lots of Easter Eggs donated by Saffron and Sorcha’s classmates.
And this isn’t the end of the schools support this year. They are also organising a charity abseil off Peacehaven Cliffs for Rockinghorse and hoping lots of the Year 7 pupils will sign up and fundraise even more money for us.
Staff from the Play Team at the hospital were really happy to accept the cake and are looking forward to being able to share it with their colleagues throughout the children’s hospital.
Thanks so much to all the brilliant pupils and staff from Roedean for all their support and generosity both now and in the future.
