Our beloved mascot Rocky laced up his hooves to take part in the Sussex Raceday charity mascot race last weekend, romping home in third place.
The much-loved Charity Mascot Race at Plumpton Racecourse’s annual Sussex Raceday, took place on 19 April. Rocky lined up with other mascots representing a range of local charities at the start line for the 100m sprint with an enthusiastic crowd cheering them on.
Plumpton Racecourse described the event as “No tactics. No form guide. Absolutely no dignity. The charity mascot race returns this Sunday… and it’s as gloriously chaotic as ever.” And they weren’t wrong!
The mascot race is a firm fan favourite, and it’s easy to see why. The mascots bring chaos and a brilliant sense of community to what is already a wonderful day out. This year’s Sussex Raceday served up seven thrilling races (eight if you count the mascots!), celebrating everything that makes Sussex special.
Rocky crossed the line in third place pipped to the post by a surprisingly speedy Emu and Plumpy, Plumpton’s own mascot, who took the top honours on home turf. Gloriously chaotic, as promised. The race also caught the attention of the broadcasters, with Rocky stopping for an interview with Sky and no doubt charming viewers with his trademark style.
Lucy Pond, friend of Rockinghorse, said, “It was a brilliant day, the atmosphere was fantastic, the crowd were so supportive, and it was a real honour to be there representing Rockinghorse. Simon ran his heart out, and we’re so proud to have taken part.”
A huge thank you to Lucy Pond for attending on behalf of Rockinghorse, and to her wonderful husband Simon for running the race as Rocky with such spirit!
Events like this are a brilliant reminder of the incredible community support that keeps Rockinghorse going helping sick babies’ children and their families across Sussex every single day.
