Ten runners raised money for Rockinghorse in the Brighton Marathon and Brighton 10k on Sunday 7 April.

The Brighton Marathon and 10k event both took place around Brighton and Hove and saw over 13,000 runners taking part. There were perfect running conditions during both events with lots of sun and dry conditions.

We had a cheer point to support runners at miles 20 and 22 along the marathon route in Hove, and staff and volunteers shouted encouragement as they made their way through the last 6 miles of the route.

One of the runners, Caroline Williams, has raised £2,200 and decided to run for Rockinghorse after her nephew Barney was born prematurely at just 25 weeks and was looked after by the team at TMBU.

She said, “It was a real boost to see the Rockinghorse cheer point so close to the end. The day was absolutely amazing. That atmosphere will always stay with me! I really hope the money raised will help make a difference for the Rockinghorse. It’s such an incredible charity.”

Another marathon runner, Stephen Carroll, decided to run for Rockinghorse because his mum works at the TMBU so he wanted to support the amazing work they do there. So far, he has raised an amazing £1,826.

Lola Bett, a Staff Nurse at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, has raised £1,741 for her run and said, “Thank you so much for all of the support on Sunday! It was such a challenge but so happy I did it!”

Brett Mendoza took on the 10k with his friends Richard and Stuart. He’s the landlord of the Caxton Arms pub in Brighton and is organising lots of different fundraising events throughout the year after his twins were looked after at the TMBU for 31 days when they were born prematurely. They have raised over £1,000 from their 10k run.

In total all these runners have raised nearly £10,000 for babies, children and young people throughout Sussex.

Emma Cunliffe, Supporter Engagement Manager at Rockinghorse, was on hand in Brighton to support the charity’s runners. She said: “It was an amazing day cheering on our Rockinghorse runners at the Brighton Marathon and seeing them whizz past our cheer point. I am very proud of every single one of them!

“The money they’ve raised will be helping babies and children across Sussex, along with their families, and will make such a difference.”
