Five runners raised over £6,500 for Rockinghorse in the Brighton Marathon last weekend.
This year’s Brighton Marathon took place around Brighton and Hove last weekend and saw over 12,500 runners taking part in this great local event. There were perfect running conditions during for the whole day with lots of sun and dry conditions.
Our team we were really grateful that the Hove Practice and Stride Healthcare let them join their team for a cheer point at mile 19 and 23. There really was a party atmosphere with music playing, flower garlands and cowbells and it was fantastic to see all the Rockinghorse runners, giving them a boost as they went on to the final part of their marathon route.
One of the runners taking part was Dawn Dunk, who works at Drove Road, a respite and residential service located in Portslade, and who raised £1.625.
Dawn said, “Drove Road is supported by Rockinghorse in so many ways. Thanks to them we get to have memorable festive parties and activities every year, and we also have a brilliant trampoline, garden equipment and a sensory room.
“I ran in honour of my childhood best friend who died of cancer at 18 and would have been 50 this year. She spent time fundraising for her local hospital as it didn’t have TVs for the children, and I know she’ll be proud of me.”
Another runner, Rob Kennett, decided to run for Rockinghorse because his daughter was cared for at the Royal Alex. So far, he has raised an amazing £1,194.
Rob said, “I wanted to run for Rockinghorse because I have seen first-hand the amazing work they do when we were at the Royal Alex with our youngest daughter who had a severe infection in her spine. The care and support given we were given as well as the many other families with poorly children made me want to support such a great charity.
“Supporting smaller local charities such as Rockinghorse at a local event like the Brighton Marathon is very special, and I am honoured to have been part of Team Rockinghorse.
“The Rockinghorse cheer point was one of the loudest on route and came at the perfect time when it started getting hard. It really helped me keep my head up and keep going!”
Emma Henderson, Supporter Engagement Manager at Rockinghorse, was on hand in Brighton to support the charity’s runners.
She said: “I’m so proud of all of the amazing Team Rockinghorse runners who took on the Brighton Marathon on Sunday. There was such a lovely atmosphere and community spirit at our cheer point, and we loved seeing all the runners whizz past!
“The money they’ve raised will make such a difference to the young patients we support across Sussex, and we can’t thank them enough.”
