Chloe Coward, a play worker at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton, is running for Rockinghorse.

She has set herself a marathon challenge by taking part in the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 23 February to help us raise vital funds.

In her own words, she explains more…

“Hi, my name is Chloe and I’m proud to be part of the Play Team at the Alex. My role as a play worker is varied and no two days are the same. My job is to support the children that come through the hospital.

“Along with the rest of the Play Team, I provide activities to keep young patients busy throughout their stay. I also provide support and reassurance ahead of procedures, which also includes support for the whole family too.

“I’m a keen runner and excited to be running for Rockinghorse. The charity works very closely with our team at the hospital. They fund toys and items that enable us to achieve the very best hospital experience we can for the children.

“It is a privilege to see young patients enjoying the equipment and facilities that Rockinghorse has funded. They include iPads, portable sensory towers and magic carpets that are interactive and can be brought to a child’s bedside. Rockinghorse has even funded entire rooms, like the Sea life-themed sensory room for children who are able to leave the wards.

“Even the little things like building Lego sets, colouring and creating pictures all help children to stay distracted, calm and happy. This in turn helps staff to carry out procedures more efficiently, such as blood tests, and also helps alleviate any anxiety for the parents.

Making a difference

“If it wasn’t for Rockinghorse, none of these activities would be possible. They also fund lots of lovely extras, such as hospital visits from farm animals, days out, parties, parent packs…the list goes on! The support we’re able to give thanks to Rockinghorse, plays a huge part in each child’s journey.

“I get to see first-hand what a huge difference this charity has on the children’s lives each and every day. The smiles are more than worth the miles and I can’t wait to run!”

Best of luck to Chloe for her upcoming Brighton Half Marathon challenge. If you’re interested in taking part in a challenge for Rockinghorse, please click here to view our full list of events.
