Our first ever Charity Tennis Tournament took place this week with teams battling out to be the inaugural winners of the Rockinghorse trophy.
The competition, kindly sponsored by James Turner of Creative Pod and Paige Collins from Warren House Accounting, took place on 25 July at Crawley Lawn and Tennis Club with 14 mixed doubles teams signing up to flex their tennis skills.
Amongst the players were representatives from Creative Pod, Warren House Accounting, Jonathan Lea Network, So Legal, Eagle Labs Barclays, Verdant Financial Planning, Flexibility Matters, SOS Systems, Search Seven, Crawley Lawn and Tennis Club members and Friends of Rockinghorse.
The teams began their day with a warmup with tennis pros from the club before the competition kicked off.
After a morning of tennis, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch, provided by Crawley Lan and Tennis Club with homemade cakes and the classic strawberries and cream for dessert. During the lunchtime break, there was a fastest service competition with the prize being taken by Sam Betts from Verdant Financial Planning, who recorded a whopping 87 mph!
It was then back to the main competition with the eventual finalists being Sam Newnham and Sam Betts from Verdant FP taking on Carol Woodman and Chris Tyler, with the two Sams being the eventual winners.

At the end of the day, the tournament victors were awarded their trophy, and the raffle prizes were handed out to the winners with prizes including a two week pass to David Lloyd at Brighton Marina, vouchers for Morley’s Bistro and Bridgeham Osteopaths, a Starbucks hamper, and a delicious cocktail kit.
Overall, the tournament raised a wonderful £3,285.00. Thank you so much to James at Creative Pod and Paige at Warren House Accountants who sponsored the day, and to Andy and Luke from Eagle Labs, Brighton, who match funded the event.
James Turner from Creative Pod said, “Creative Pod was proud to sponsor the first Rockinghorse Tennis Tournament. We are always trying to help our charity partners come up with new fund-raising ideas and as a big tennis fan I thought it would make a great corporate event.
“Not only did it showcase the amazing facilities at Crawley Lawn Tennis Club, but it also helped raise over £3,000 for the charity. We can’t wait for the next year’s event.”
Amanda Hetherington, Head of Partnerships at Rockinghorse, added, “We were so delighted to run our first ever Rockinghorse Tennis Tournament this year. With the help of Paige Collins, James Turner and Crawley Lawn and Tennis Club we were able to put this event on for our fabulous supporters.
“Luckily the rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and we are so grateful for everyone’s continued support to ensure we can be there for children and families in our local area.”
We also couldn’t have done this without the support of Crawley Lawn and Tennis Club and the lovely Russ, Kerry and Craig, so many thanks so much for making the day run so smoothly!
