Firefighters world record charity challenge
A group of firefighters from Hove are taking part in an ambitious charity challenge to complete a world record in support of Rockinghorse.
The Green Watch Hove Firefighters team (pictured above) are currently training hard to beat the world record for ‘The longest vertical distance down a fireman’s pole in an hour by a team of ten’ to raise money for sick children in Sussex and The Fire Fighters Charity.
The Green Watch team have raised over £30,000 in the past seven years for various causes after taking part in a variety of charity challenges. They held the world record for the pole drop for five years until it was beaten in 2014. The current record is 6188 metres and the team are hoping to beat that by hitting anything between 6500-7000 metres.
Speaking of the challenge, Green Watch firefighter Kieran, said: “Due to cuts from the government, Hove Fire Station will be losing a fire engine on 1 April and our watch of 13 will be dropped to seven, so we are getting split up. I felt it would be a good time to set a new record and would be quite fitting as the pole drop was the first challenge we ever did as a team. We are choosing to support Rockinghorse as a couple of us in the team have had our children admitted to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital over the years, so it’s nice to give back in some way.”
The world record challenge will be taking place on Saturday 19 March in the main foyer at Churchill Square Shopping Centre in Brighton. Spectators are being encouraged to come down and support the team for the challenge which is due to begin at 1pm, with other entertainment and activities from 10am-5pm.
As the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) and a vital supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU) in Brighton, we raise money for life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment, whilst also ensuring that children are treated in an environment better suited to their needs. Our charity is nearly 50 years old and it’s thanks to the support of the local community that we are able to continue to support sick children and their families across Sussex.
