Brighton Marina played host to the second annual Rockinghorse Dragon Boat Race last Sunday (24 April) which saw over 200 competitors take part in the event.

Raising money for sick children in Sussex, 14 teams from businesses across the county battled it out on the Marina waters to be crowned 2016 champions. They collectively helped to raise over £20,000 through sponsorship money and funds raised on the day – an incredible amount!

The event was blessed with good weather and welcomed many spectators to Marina Square who cheered on those taking part. Following a three-way battle between Bidborough Dragons, Plane Sailing, Domestic Dragons, it was Bidborough Dragons (pictured below left) who proved to be on winning form and were presented with the prestigious glass trophy (pictured below right).

As the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, we raise money for items necessary to every child’s treatment; from furnishings and toys for the wards through to cutting-edge diagnostic machines and life-saving medical equipment. We also provide vital support to the neighbouring Trevor Man Baby Unit, and its sister site, the Special Care Baby Unit in Haywards Heath.

Speaking after the event, Analiese Doctrove, Head of Fundraising at Rockinghorse, said: “We had a great day despite the chillier-than-usual April weather, which didn’t seem to faze the teams taking part and there were some great fancy dress outfits on display! Huge thanks to all of the competitors who got involved and helped to raise a fantastic amount of money for Rockinghorse.

“We’d also like to extend our thanks to Brighton Marina and the Dragon Boat Events company for making the event possible, and to all our other supporters on the day.”

We are already putting plans in place for a Dragon Boat Race in spring 2017 as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations…watch this space!
