Our wellbeing service organised a special training session for a new quilting workshop at The Alex.
Spending a lot of time in hospital can be really boring; nothing to do and not able to see your friends or family as often as you’d like. But for children and young people it can be even worse.
Not being able to play, have fun or see your friends at school can make everything seem even worse. So having something fun or relaxing to do can make all the difference and help time pass more quickly.
Our Wellbeing Service aims to find things to help combat these feelings, including a brand-new quilting workshop drop-in that will be taking place every Friday in the hospital.
Quilting is a fun sewing technique where you stitch together three layers or decorative fabric and wadding, to create a blanket or throw.
In order to help make sure that staff facilitating these sessions can be helping their patients in the best way, the Wellbeing Service organised a training session last week with specialist quilting tutor Rachel D’Ambrosio from The Sew Happy Quilter’s Association.
Rachel came to the hospital to work with members of The Play Team and teachers from the school at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, showing them a range of materials and techniques that they can pass on to their patients.
They all had great fun creating some lovely fabric samples and experimenting with different ways to make patterns and learning how to pass these on in the drop-ins.
The overall aim of these sessions will be to create a big patchwork quilt that can be displayed in the hospital to celebrate all the different artists involved along with creating something beautiful for the hospital space.
