The number of young people being admitted to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital with mental health issues has dramatically increased recently. But there are lots of ways you can help support them.

Young people between the ages of 10 and 18 have a lot to contend with in a normal year but following the upheaval of the coronavirus pandemic, many of their worlds have turned upside down, so it’s not surprising that some have struggled with their mental health.

The Play Team at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton has seen a dramatic increase in the number of young people being admitted for treatment related to mental health, with patients often spending months at a time in the hospital.

And the support they need varies considerably from the younger patients being treated at the Alex.

Many of these young people would greatly benefit from having some relaxing clothes to wear, as opposed to a hospital gown, so they can relax and feel more comfortable. So they are in need of jumpers, pyjamas, leggings, joggers and socks, suitable for girls and boys, aged from around 10 to 18.

And, being able to have a few items to help pamper themselves, like mini shower gels, shampoos and conditioners, and nail varnish sets would all be great donations.

It’s also important that they have things to keep themselves busy that don’t always revolve around using a screen, so activities like paint by numbers or craft sets to make rings or bracelets would also be useful*.

So, if you are able to make a donation to help us buy some of these products, or if you’re headed to Primark and might be able to pick up a few bits while you’re there, please let us know. We would be more than happy to accept any donations and take them up to the Alex on your behalf.

We all know the struggle that people of all ages can have with mental health, but for young people who are feeling isolated and worried, these little things can make such a huge difference to their journey towards recovery.

*If you are able to donate craft or pampering products, please ensure they don’t include any sharp objects like knives, scissors or needles.
