Christmas begins in Brighton!

Brighton’s Christmas lights were switched on yesterday evening at an event which saw crowds gather for the festivities.

Hundreds of people got into the spirit of Christmas for the Brilliant Brighton Christmas lights on East Street, in association with Capital Brighton and Rockinghorse, and sponsored by Legal & General. The free festive party was presented by Dave and Miranda from Capital Brighton’s Breakfast Show and saw some of the city’s best talent perform.

The all-important job of counting down and switching on the lights went to inspiring 15-year-old fundraiser Jake Heal from Hove (pictured above). Despite having the rare genetic Prader-Willi Syndrome, Jake raised £4,000 for Rockinghorse earlier this year at our iDrop Abseil from the British Airways i360 tower on Brighton seafront.

He was joined by CBeebies TV presenter and Rockinghorse Trustee, Sid Sloane (pictured above), and the big man himself – Father Christmas (pictured below). The event also featured a charity raffle to help us raise funds with a host of wonderful prizes donated by local shops and businesses.

Gavin Stewart, CEO of Brilliant Brighton, said: “We love organising the Christmas lights switch-on and it was great to see so many people celebrating the start of the festive season with us. Thank you to Capital Brighton and Rockinghorse for helping us host the community Christmas event, as well as our sponsor, Legal & General for assisting us to light up the city.”

Don’t miss Brilliant Brighton’s late-night shopping event on Thursday 13 December which will see over 500 city centre shops, restaurants and cafes stay open until 8pm – with plenty of entertainment, in-store events and offers to help make you Christmas shopping a truly enjoyable experience.
