Four depot teams from Brighton and Hove Buses competed against each other in a fabulous football tournament at Worthing Football Club.
Ryan Tanner, Whitehawk and Newhaven Operations Manager for Brighton and Hove Buses and tournament organiser tells us more:
“The atmosphere was electric at Worthing FC on Sunday, as 200 spectators descended on the ground to watch four depot teams battle it out for the inter-depot football tournament trophy, with the help of an FA referee.
“With a children’s entertainer, bar and food on hand, spectators were treated to four hard-fought games between the depots.
“First to take to the pitch were the Conway Wanderers and Metrobus FC, with Metrobus clinching the win at 1-0.
“Next up were Lewes Road Rovers vs Whitehaven FC. Whitehaven FC scored two against the eventual winners, but Lewes Road Rovers seized their chances to take a 4-2 victory.
“In the next game, the Conway Wanderers took third place with a final score of 1-0. Despite being the second highest scorers in the tournament, Whitehaven FC came fourth.
“The final, Lewes Road Rovers vs Metrobus FC, was a stand-out moment in the ground, with the crowd getting fully behind their respective teams and both depots giving it their all. Lewes Road eventually triumphed 5-0 to take home the title and trophy!
“The top scorer was Jake Pierce, who scored three goals for the winners.
“The event was also an opportunity to get together with family and friends, have fun and raise funds – with over £2,500 raised for our colleague David Gunn (50%) and Rockinghorse Children’s Charity (50%).”
Amanda Hetherington, Head of Partnerships at Rockinghorse, was really thankful for all the support that Brighton and Hove Buses have shown Rockinghorse. She said, “Brighton and Hove Buses have been really supportive, they donated £500 from their Community Fund, displayed our Rockinghorse posters on their buses during April and have raised a total of £1,262.68 for us.”
Ryan added, “A huge thank you to everyone who played, helped organise and came along to support, and those who brought along family and friends to enjoy the day – it really made it an amazing atmosphere. Special mention to Malcom Everett for raising £585 in sponsorship money!”
