Roedean competition winner delivers Easter cake, along with a donation of Easter Eggs, to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital
Roedean, the well-known independent day and boarding school for girls in East Brighton, has supported Rockinghorse for many years, including being chosen as their official charity for the Year 7 pupils.
Since 2021 they have donated to the charity, organised Easter Egg collection, and run a special competition for the girls in Year 7 every year to design a cake which is then made and delivered to the Alex as a way of thanking the wonderful NHS staff who work there.
Each year they choose a different theme for the cake design, with this year’s being Woodland Wellbeing Days, after the special days that we run for children managing challenging health conditions.
Miss Banford, Head of Year 7 at Roedean, said: “It’s been lovely to see the year group rally together and collect so many Easter eggs for children spending time in hospital.
“And we’re really proud that this is the fifth year of the cake competition, and it’s always amazing seeing the girls get creative with their designs.”
This year’s winning cake design was created by Marion, who wanted the cake to represent the outdoor aspect of the special activity days along with being egg shaped in a nod to the season.
Marion said, “I do quite a lot of drawing and love to sketch. As soon as I found out the theme was woodland wellbeing, I thought of trees and made them a big part of my design. It’s great to see it come to life!”
The competition was judged by the school’s expert pastry chef, Ruth Sambrook, and the opportunity to see their design made into a real cake by Ruth proved to be really popular, with 15 entries.
The finished cake not only looked delicious, with decorations representing trees, wildlife and flowers, but the cake itself was chocolate with a buttercream filling and was absolutely delicious!
The final cake was delivered to The Alex today along with big bag of Easter Eggs donated by Marion’s classmates.
Staff from the Play Team at the hospital accepted the cake and quickly set about cutting it up and sharing it with their colleagues throughout the children’s hospital.
Thanks so much to all the brilliant pupils and staff from Roedean for all their support and generosity both now and in the future.
