A marathon feat as runners race in the heat

Rockinghorse runners took part in the eighth annual Brighton Marathon on Sunday (9 April) to raise thousands of pounds for children in Sussex.

Participants took part in the 26-mile race in very warm conditions for April, with temperatures reaching 20 degrees along parts of the course. We welcomed a team of 33 runners who collectively raised an incredible £14,000, with money still coming in.

All funds raised will be donated towards our 50th anniversary appeal; Sussex Giving for Sussex Children. We aim to raise £500,000 in 2017 to be split between 10 children’s centres and paediatric services in Sussex.

Those who took part in the event included Stuart Batchelor, Vice-President at American Express in Brighton. He was running with friends Mike and Jane Joshi in memory of Scott Mills, who had received treatment at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, of which Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm. They have raised over £3,300.

Joining him was our Trusts & Appeals Fundraising Manager, Louise Bartha, who completed her first marathon in 5 hours 13 minutes. She said: “Rockinghorse is a cause close to my heart and both of my sons have relied on the services at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. I am so grateful to have this incredible place as our local hospital.”

Hannah Seltzer, Events Fundraiser at Rockinghorse, thanked our marathon team. She said: “We are overwhelmed by the support received again this year. Our runners have raised a fantastic amount of money towards our Golden Jubilee appeal and we cannot thank them enough for their support.”

We will soon be releasing details of our charity places in the 2018 Brighton Marathon and Brighton Half Marathon. To register your interest, call 01273 330044 or email hannah.seltzer@rockinghorse.org.uk.

Of course events like this wouldn’t be possible without the help and support of our wonderful volunteers. A special mention to Amanda from Bend Fit Mend who provided much-deserved post-race massages for our runners.
