Beachy Head Marathon
Formerly known as the Seven Sisters Marathon, the Beachy Head Marathon is one of the biggest off-road marathons in the UK and is really popular with trail and hill runners due to its challenging but route through the South Downs National Park. And due to the pandemic, this is the only race of this type taking place this year Sussex.
This year marks 40 years since the initial Beachy Head Marathon and for the first time organisers have added in a half marathon distance.
Following guidelines around COVID-19, this year’s event has been changed to ensure maximum levels of safety for all the participants. Initially the three distances (10k, half and full marathons) have been split over three different dates. In addition, a range of other measures have been put in place to adhere to social distancing guidance including arrival times, staggered starts and limits on spectators. To find out all the changes along with further information about this year’s event, please take a look at the Visit Eastbourne website.
However, there’s still lots to enjoy, not least of which a route comprising of breath-taking views and challenges around the beautiful scenery of the area.
Nicola, one of last year’s participants, explain why she got involved; “I wanted to run Beachy Head marathon last year because if its location, course and great atmosphere. I ran it last year and I have decided to run it again this year, so it must be good! I love running through the country side and Beachy Head offered so many different views running through fields, tracks, small country lanes and along the coast. The support from spectators is wonderful (when your not too remote for people to be there!) and the fellow runners are all really friendly. I decided to run for the rocking horse charity because I know so many families that have benefited from their wonderful work.”
