Rockinghorse supporter and volunteer, Cian Hollands, has won a prestigious award to recognise his fundraising work.

Nine-year-old Cian from Eastbourne was announced as winner of the Fundraiser Award at the recent More Radio Child of Sussex Awards. Celebrating the achievements of children in Sussex, the event took place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel on Friday 6 December.

Over the last three years, Cian has been a regular fundraiser and volunteer for Rockinghorse. His charity journey started in August 2015, when his little brother, Evan, was born premature and transferred to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU) in Brighton.

A year later, Cian made the decision to give back to the people that helped save his baby brother. As a vital supporter of the TMBU, Cian, with the help of his mum Abi and dad Nick, turned to Rockinghorse.

Since then, he has volunteered at a number of our fundraising events, such as the Brighton Marathon, where Cian helped to support our team of Rockinghorse runners. Not only that, Cian has raised well over £2,000 through various fundraising activities.

Helping other children

A determined fundraiser, he even wrote a letter to his school and many other local schools, to ask if they would also help. In response, mufti days were held to help Cian raise funds for Rockinghorse.

His letter read, “Dear Mr Raynard, please can the school have a mufti day for the Rockinghorse children’s charity, on Friday 25 May 2018.

“In 2015 my baby brother was born early and was poorly. He needed help from doctors that this charity supports. I would like to say thank you for saving my baby brother and raise money so they can help other children. Lots of love Cian Hollands class 3A.”

His mum and dad are very proud of everything their son has achieved so far. Abi says, “We are very proud of him and how much he wants to support Rockinghorse. He has coped extremely well with his brother being poorly when he was born, and he has had his own struggle with school too.

“He is so good at just getting on with things and always wants to help other people, particularly Rockinghorse. We are planning on doing more fundraising next year, so watch this space!”

Congratulations to Cian on his much-deserved win. We are so grateful to him and his family and feel very lucky to have such fantastic support. Well done Cian, we think you’re a star!
