Teenage rooms

The teenagers at the Alex need a space of their ownThe teenage years can be fraught with anxieties and insecurities and when a young person is admitted into hospital with a serious illness, these feelings don’t go away.

In 2010, The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton saw 1,942 teenage inpatients and 20,258 teenage outpatients. The teenagers receive fantastic medical treatment but the hospital wanted to offer them more. Previously the young people had nowhere to relax, get away from their illnesses or interact with peers during their stay in hospital.

That's why Rockinghorse offered to help The Alex and make the cutting edge hospital even more child and teenger friendly.

We are now proud to announce that the charity has raised £8,250 to fund the refurbishment of three teenage rooms, where older children will be able to get away from the pressures of their illnesses. Rockinghorse and the hospital asked teenagers what they would like in their new rooms and the teenagers requested air hockey tables, DVD players, comfy chairs and computer games equipment.

The new teenage rooms will make life a little easier for the young people in hospital.

Rockinghorse would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the funding of this project, including Stella Buckingham, Amanda Munday and Starbucks Brighton.

The Starbucks Realising Potential Programme partly funded the teenage rooms and staff members volunteered their time to assemble the furniture and to put the new equipment into place. View pictures that were taken while Starbucks staff were working on the rooms.
