Walkers go the extra mile for Rockinghorse
Charity supporters gathered at Goodwood Racecourse in Chichester, West Sussex, last weekend (Saturday 13 May) for the annual Just Walk challenge.
Organised by events company Across the Divide, participants took part in 10km, 20km, 30km, 40km or a 60km route around the South Downs to raise money for their chosen charity. Over 1,000 people took part, with 29 walkers supporting Rockinghorse, raising over £7,800 with funds still being donated.
Those walking on behalf of Rockinghorse included our Schools & Community Fundraiser Liz McCluskey, and Finance Manager Rhian Walsh who had challenged themselves to walk the 60km route, completing it in 16 hours. Local businesses taking part in aid of us included staff from The Grand Hotel in Brighton, TSB bank in Brighton and six employees from Russell New business, tax and charity advisors based in Steyning (pictured above), who have chosen to support us as their Charity of the Year.
Our Challenge Events Fundraiser Hannah Seltzer, was joined by five members of the Mann family for the shorter 10km challenge. The Mann family are relatives of the late Dr Trevor Mann, who founded Rockinghorse in 1967. A pioneer in paediatric care, Trevor’s memory lives on through the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, based within the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where Trevor worked for many years.
His son, Dr Nick Mann, said: “Rockinghorse was originally set up by my father Trevor and in its 50th year, myself and the rest of the Mann family are keen to support their fundraising events. Five of us took part in the 10km Just Walk route, including my wife Sue, daughter Lizzie, my sister Ros and my brother Mike. The charity walk provided such a great opportunity to join many other Rockinghorse supporters and raise much-needed funds.”
Hannah Seltzer, Challenge Events Fundraiser at Rockinghorse, added: “Our thanks to everyone who took part in Just Walk and helped to raise a fantastic amount of money towards our 50th year appeal. We were delighted to be an official charity partner of the event, and its thanks to partnerships like this that we are able to continue to support children in Sussex.”
We’re celebrating the charity’s 50th anniversary this year and all funds raised from the Just Walk challenge will be donated to our Golden Jubilee appeal; Sussex Giving for Sussex Children. We aim to raise £500,000 in 2017 which will be split between 10 children’s centres and paediatric services in Sussex. To find out more about these projects, please click here.
