Super heroes run for Rockinghorse

Superman, Batman, Iron Man and Wonder Woman were joined by fellow super heroes on Hove seafront last weekend (Sunday 21 May) for the Super Sunday fun run.

Fundraising for Rockinghorse, participants took part in 5km or 10km distances, as well as a one-mile fun run for mini super heroes aged 4-8 years old. Races started at the Meeting Place café on the promenade at Hove Lawns, heading West towards Hove Lagoon and back again.

The Rockinghorse double-decker bus was present at the event and provided participants and spectators the opportunity to have their name displayed on the front for a donation. It also proved to be the perfect viewing platform to watch those crossing the finish line. The bus has been designed by the Brighton & Hove Bus Company marking our Golden Jubilee this year.

Thanks to sponsorship raised by competitors and an additional donation from registration fees, over £1,000 was donated for our 50th anniversary appeal; Sussex Giving for Sussex Children. We aim to raise £500,000 this year to help 10 children’s centres and paediatric services in Sussex.

Each beneficiary will receive £50,000 towards projects enabling them to improve, refurbish and develop their environment for the young people benefiting from their work. Those receiving funds from the appeal include the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton and the neighbouring Trevor Mann Baby Unit.

David Chapman from Wacky Events, organiser of Super Sunday, said: “As a brilliant local charity, Rockinghorse was an easy choice for our charity partner, especially as 2017 is their 50th year. Their enthusiasm from the very first time we got in touch was amazing and confirmed our feeling that they would be super to work with. On Sunday, before, during and after the event, their volunteers were fantastic and really helped make it fun for everyone taking part.

He added: “Loads of smiles were worn by a fabulous variety of super heroes running up and down the seafront and we’ve had lots of positive comments. Massive thanks to all the entrants, volunteers, the council, all the spectators and Brighton & Hove Bus Company, you are all super heroes!”

Hannah Seltzer, Events Fundraising Co-ordinator at Rockinghorse, said: “Huge thanks to everyone who got involved in Super Sunday and helped us to raise such a fantastic amount of money for our 50th year appeal. It was a pleasure working with David and the team from Wacky Events and we are so grateful to have been chosen as beneficiary charity of the fun run – we look forward to working with them on another exciting challenge next year.”
