Southern Railway score goals for Rockinghorse
Wednesday 28 October 2009
Southern Railway train driver, Steve Doyle, presented a
cheque to local charity Rockinghorse for £1,000, at Brighton Station on
Wednesday (28 October).
The money was raised through a sponsored football match that took place on Sunday 4 October at Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne, in memory of Southern Railway staff member Luke Veness who passed away last year, aged 34.
Staff members from both Eastbourne and Brighton depots were involved, including train drivers, conductors, management and platform staff.
The Brighton team won the game by 3-0 with goals scored by Paul Smith and Steve Doyle. Doyle also took on the role of team manager for Brighton, along with Aaron Bass for Eastbourne.
Doyle said: “This is the second year running that we have organised a football match in memory of Luke and this year we were pleased to raise so much money for such a worthwhile charity.”
Gavin Fisher, Chief Executive of Rockinghorse, said: “That’s an incredible amount of money that will really make a difference to children in hospital. We are so grateful to Southern Railway and to everyone who took part in the match for the kind donation.”
