Rockinghorse garden gets the go-ahead
Monday 5 October 2009
Rockinghorse
has secured funding for a specially adapted and accessible garden for the
children at Finches Respite Centre in Burgess Hill.
The Sussex-based charity has raised its target of £47,766, which means work can now begin in January, with the hope of the garden being ready in time for summer.
The garden, which is currently mostly lawn and unsuitable for wheelchair users, will undergo a huge face-lift to make it a safe haven for children with disabilities, allowing them to use all of their senses, experience the wonder of nature, socialise with friends and – most importantly – have fun.
The cost of the project, kindly donated by trusts, companies and individuals, will allow for the garden to be completely re-developed and will include accessible play equipment, special flooring to ensure children can safely investigate the play area and a sensory garden with a jungle area to explore.
Finches
provides flexible respite care for children aged up to 19 with complex health
needs. Many of the children have life limiting conditions, which leaves them
increasingly dependent on their parents and carers. The dedicated team at
Finches aim to maximise a child’s ability to do the things they enjoy, while
providing the families with a well-earned break.
Gavin Fisher, Rockinghorse Chief Executive, said: “It’s fantastic to have secured the money for the garden at Finches and we cannot thank our supporters enough for their generosity. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished project next summer.”
